It’s that time of year again! Summer is on its way and it will be here before you know it. And it seems the summers get longer and hotter as the years go on, and maybe it feels like some days your air conditioner is no match for the soaring temperatures outside. But if you run your air conditioning properly, you’re in for a much more comfortable few months.
If you use a window or portable air conditioner, use curtains or blinds to keep it cool when the sun is shining directly on it.
Use A Thermostat
For as little as $30, a programmable thermostat can allow you to have much more control over your air conditioning – and your bills. You can use it to set the temperature a little higher when you’re at work or away from home so you waste less energy cooling your home.
Keep It Clean
A clean air conditioner is a happy air conditioner. If you’re using a window or portable air conditioner, clean the filter at least once a week or more frequently if you have furry pets. If you have a combined HVAC system, replace the filter every couple of months during high-use periods. If there’s an outdoor unit that’s a part of your system, such as if you have a central air conditioning unit, make sure there’s no debris like leaves, branches or lawn clippings interfering with the air flow.
Monitor Your Hydro Bills
Run your air conditioner for a month in the summer without making any of the above changes. You’ll typically notice a large increase, but then you can make your changes and see how much of an impact your air conditioner is having on your overall energy consumption. If your bill is still pretty high, you may want to look deeper to find the source.
