Moving is no fun for anyone, really. While the excitement of moving into a new home is significant, there’s a lot of work to be done before you get there. Many Canadians opt to hire a moving company instead of doing it all themselves, and this can be a solid option for many busy families. However, not all moving companies – or moving agreements – are created equal. Here are five ways to ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible:
Check reviews. Do your due diligence on whatever moving company you decide to hire. This can include checking out the Canadian Better Business Bureau website or websites specifically tailored to contractors like movers, such as Homestars. Be wary of overly positive reviews that may be fraudulent. No one can be perfect all of the time, so take how companies respond to negative reviews into account as well.
Get a contract. A solid contract with every agreement in writing is vital when working with a moving company. Ensure that no details are missed, especially when it comes to overage for lost or damaged items.
Avoid moving in the summer. The summer is peak moving time across Canada, and you’re more likely to end up moving in accordance to the movers’ schedule instead of your own. Not only that, but prices can increase during peak times. If possible, try moving in the spring or fall.
Never pack on moving day. While it can be tempting to save a few items for the last minute, this is just asking for problems like forgetting something or mismanaging your time resulting in having to rush.
Start unpacking right away. Some movers have very short windows in which you can claim something was damaged in the move – even 24 hours. Start unpacking as soon as you can just in case.
